Our Psychiatrists & Psychologists review referrals from your doctor prior to arranging an appointment. Once reviewed our staff will be in touch to arrange a time for you.
Whilst you will need a referral from your doctor to meet with one of our psychiatrists or psychologists, you can apply for a session with one of our counsellors today.
HOW CAN A PSYCHIATRIST HELP YOU?
Psychiatrists assess all of your mental and physical symptoms. They make a diagnosis and work with you to develop a management plan for your treatment and recovery. They may work with your GP and other mental health professionals such as a psychologist or counsellor depending on your individual needs.
WHY MIGHT YOUR DOCTOR SUGGEST YOU SEE A PSYCHIATRIST?
Your Doctor may feel that they need to explore alternate options for treatment with regard to your medications or diagnosis.
HOW CAN A PSYCHOLOGIST HELP YOU?
Psychologists work with you to help you learn coping strategies and manage behaviour related issues you may face in life. They also provide impartial support, will listen to your problems and guide you to solutions. Each individual psychologist will choose a specific type of therapy that best addresses the person’s problem.
WHY MIGHT YOUR DOCTOR SUGGEST YOU SEE A PSYCHOLOGIST?
Your Doctor may feel that you will benefit from learning coping strategies or talking through events that have occurred.
HOW CAN A COUNSELLOR HELP YOU?
A counsellor will help you talk through your problems, offer advice and help you work out a way forward. Some of the areas our counsellors may help are Prostate and Breast cancer counselling which Procare offer for free.
DO I NEED A DOCTOR'S REFERRAL?
Your Doctor may provide a referral however it is not a requirement and you can simply contact our office to arrange an appointment.

Dr Martin Cohen is the clinical lead for the team, collaborating with Hunter New England Health, GPs, community groups, and other stakeholders. This collective approach helps us to provide timely and appropriate care to the community.
